Ethiopia finishes the Nile dam that will increase its electricity output

Ethiopia's Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed announced the completion of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD), a controversial project on the Nile River. Egypt, heavily reliant on the Nile, has long opposed the dam fearing reduced water supply. Despite ongoing negotiations and disagreements over water allocation during droughts, Ethiopia plans to inaugurate the dam in September. The GERD, Africa's largest dam, is expected to significantly boost Ethiopia's energy production and alleviate poverty, though tensions with Egypt persist due to an unresolved colonial-era water rights agreement.
