Exceptionally large Roman shoes discovered at Magna fort near Hadrian’s Wall

Archaeologists excavating at Magna Roman fort near Hadrian's Wall unearthed 32 ancient leather shoes, with 25% exceeding 30 centimeters—one measuring a record-breaking 32.6 cm. This discovery, part of a five-year project, contrasts with the Vindolanda collection, revealing a significantly higher proportion of unusually large shoes at Magna. The exceptional preservation in waterlogged conditions highlights the importance of continued conservation efforts in the face of climate change. The diverse shoe sizes may reflect the fort's varied military population.
