China sanctions former Filipino lawmaker who defended Philippines' South China Sea claims

China sanctioned former Philippine Senator Francis Tolentino, barring him from China, Hong Kong, and Macau. The sanction stems from Tolentino's authorship of bills asserting Philippine claims in the disputed South China Sea and his accusations of Chinese election interference and espionage. Tolentino, who views the sanction as an honor, maintains he will continue defending Philippine interests. The Philippine government acknowledged the sanctions, stating they are not conducive to improving bilateral relations. Tensions between the two countries remain high due to ongoing disputes in the South China Sea.
