SSMIS data, collected from three low-Earth orbit weather satellites, provides critical information about the inner workings of hurricanes, including their centers, which is impossible to obtain via other means, especially at night or over open water. This loss of nearly half of all available microwave data could significantly degrade hurricane forecasts, potentially leading to missed storms and impacting millions along coastlines. While the satellites remain functional, the Navy, responsible for data processing, has not commented on the decision, sparking concern among scientists and meteorologists.
