New research suggests that the Nuvvuagittuq Greenstone Belt in northern Quebec contains the oldest known fragments of Earth's crust, dating back 4.16 billion years. This challenges the previously accepted oldest rocks, the Acasta Gneiss, at 4.03 billion years old. The study used a rare earth element, samarium, to date the rocks, overcoming previous limitations with zircon dating. While some scientists remain cautious, the findings offer valuable insights into Earth's early history and the possibility of early life.
