Ancient Zombie Fungus Found in 99-Million-Year-Old Amber

Scientists have discovered two 99-million-year-old insects, a fly and an ant, trapped in amber, showcasing the oldest known examples of zombie fungi. The fungi, two new species named *Paleoophiocordyceps gerontoformicae* and *Paleoophiocordyceps ironomyiae*, burst from the insects' heads, demonstrating parasitic control even in the Cretaceous period. This discovery highlights the complex ecological relationships existing millions of years ago and offers insights into the evolution of entomopathogenic fungi, whose modern counterparts still infect insects today. Ethical concerns surrounding the amber's origin in Myanmar are acknowledged.
