Rock slides and flooding close damaged section of I-40 in Smoky Mountains

Heavy rain and a rock slide have closed a section of Interstate 40 in the Great Smoky Mountains for at least two weeks. The damage, near the North Carolina border, is more extensive than initially thought, impacting both the highway and nearby ramps. Engineers are assessing the stability of slopes before repairs begin. The area experienced significant rainfall, exacerbating pre-existing damage from a September hurricane. A lengthy detour, adding considerable travel time, is in place for affected drivers, with restrictions on alternative routes.
