Plastic shopping bag policies are actually working, a new study suggests

A new study published in Science reveals that policies banning or charging fees for plastic bags significantly reduce plastic bag litter on shorelines. Researchers analyzed 180 local programs across the US, finding a 25-47% decrease in plastic bag litter in areas with these policies. While effective, the study notes that these policies don't solve the broader plastic pollution problem, and additional measures, including regulations on production and supply, are needed. The findings highlight the positive impact of plastic bag bans and fees on marine ecosystems, but emphasize the necessity of a comprehensive approach to combat plastic pollution.
