A new COVID-19 variant, NB.1.8.1 or "Nimbus," is causing a rise in cases in parts of the world, particularly the eastern Mediterranean, Southeast Asia, and western Pacific regions. Characterized by a painful "razor blade throat," it has been detected in the US. While the WHO classifies it as a "variant under monitoring," experts state the variant doesn't appear more severe than others, and current vaccines remain effective. The rise in cases hasn't resulted in significantly increased hospitalizations or severe illness.
