Purdue Pharma, Sacklers reach new $7.4 billion opioid settlement

Purdue Pharma and the Sackler family have reached a $7.4 billion settlement to resolve lawsuits stemming from the opioid crisis. The deal, approved by all 50 states and territories, will see the Sacklers contribute approximately $6.5 billion over 15 years. While some lauded the settlement as a significant step towards addressing the crisis and compensating victims, others criticized the relatively small amount allocated to direct victims, estimating payouts as low as $3,500 per person. The settlement still requires federal bankruptcy court approval, but experts anticipate its acceptance.
