A severe solar storm, reaching a G4 level on Sunday, offered a chance to see the aurora borealis further south than usual, potentially even in Illinois. While the storm weakened in the evening, the possibility of northern lights remained. The Space Weather Prediction Center advised patience, as activity can fluctuate rapidly. Although not as intense as the May 2024 storms, the event continues into Monday at a weaker level. With the sun in a solar maximum, more such events are anticipated.
