A record number of 1,194 migrants crossed the English Channel on Saturday in 18 boats, the highest daily total in 2025. This brings the year's total to 14,811, a 42% increase compared to last year at this time. Defence Secretary John Healey criticized the situation, describing the migrant crossings as 'like a taxi service' and highlighting the need for improved cooperation with French authorities to intercept smugglers before they reach UK waters. The Home Office reiterated its commitment to dismantling people-smuggling gangs.
