France to ban smoking on beaches, parks and near schools

France will implement a nationwide ban on smoking in outdoor areas frequented by children, starting July 1st. This includes beaches, parks, schools, and bus stops, but excludes cafe terraces. Violators face a €135 fine. While electronic cigarettes are currently exempt, restrictions on nicotine content are under consideration. This follows a decrease in smoking rates, although tobacco-related deaths remain high at over 75,000 annually. The ban builds upon existing municipal initiatives and reflects strong public support.
