The remains of 19 Black individuals, whose heads were sent to Germany for racist research in 1872, have been returned to New Orleans after a two-year effort. A memorial service with a jazz funeral will be held Saturday at Dillard University to honor them. The repatriation, led by a Dillard University committee, aims to confront the historical injustice and acknowledge the victims' humanity. Despite attempts, descendants were not located, but the committee used death records to identify the individuals. The remains will be stored at the Hurricane Katrina Memorial.
