A new study suggests the extinct megalodon shark had a more diverse diet than previously thought. Analysis of fossilized teeth reveals megalodon was an opportunistic feeder, consuming a wide range of prey, from smaller fish to large marine mammals, to meet its massive daily caloric needs. Regional variations in diet were also observed, indicating megalodon adapted to locally available resources. This challenges the long-held belief of megalodon as a solely whale-hunting apex predator and provides further insight into its extinction, potentially due to competition with the evolving great white shark.
