New research using a machine-learning algorithm analyzing 86,000 Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter images reveals that mysterious dark and light streaks on Mars' Olympus Mons are not water flows, as previously suspected. Instead, the streaks are likely caused by dry dust slides on the mountain's slopes. This conclusion, published in Nature Communications, dispels hopes of surface water and potential life in these areas. The streaks, visible in an enhanced ESA ExoMars Trace Gas Orbiter image, remain a visually striking feature.
