National Weather Service seeks to fill 155 ‘critical’ vacancies ahead of hurricane season

The National Weather Service (NWS) is facing a severe staffing shortage, with over 560 departures since the Trump administration. To address this, they're offering 155 internal reassignment opportunities for NOAA employees, a temporary fix while a federal hiring freeze remains. Critical positions needing filling include meteorologists, IT specialists, hydrologists, and electronics technicians. The shortage has led to reduced operating hours at some offices and a complete lack of management in Houston. This comes as hurricane season begins.
