Another equipment outage impacts flights at Newark Liberty International Airport

A telecommunications issue at a Philadelphia air traffic control facility caused a 45-minute ground stop for Newark Liberty International Airport on Sunday. This follows recent similar incidents, including a Friday outage and an April incident causing controller trauma leave and widespread cancellations. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy assures the public it's safe to fly, though delays and reduced capacity are expected for several weeks while a new air traffic control system is implemented by 2029. A new direct line between Newark and the Philadelphia facility is also under construction, aiming for completion by summer.
