A record number of cardinals, many unfamiliar with each other, are gathered at the Vatican to elect the next pope. The Vatican guesthouse is overbooked, and preliminary meetings have been described as intense. Several new cardinals from countries without previous papal representation have even been difficult to locate during the pre-conclave meetings. Voting begins Wednesday in the Sistine Chapel.
