Venice is sinking. Now there’s a radical plan to lift the entire city above rising floodwaters

Venice, sinking due to rising sea levels and subsidence, faces an existential threat. While the MOSE flood barriers offer temporary protection, a new plan proposes injecting water deep underground to raise the seabed and elevate the city by approximately 12 inches, providing a 50-year grace period. This innovative approach, proposed by engineer Pietro Teatini, aims to buy time for a more permanent solution, although concerns remain about its feasibility and potential unforeseen consequences. The project's cost is estimated to be significantly less than the MOSE system.
