'Thunderbolts' Strikes With $31.5 Million Opening Day

Marvel's "Thunderbolts" debuted strongly, grossing $31.5 million on Friday and previews, projecting a $70-75 million opening weekend. While a sizable start for a potential new franchise, it's among the lower MCU openings, falling below "Black Widow" and "Guardians of the Galaxy". The film received positive audience scores ("A-") contrasting with the poorly received "Captain America: Brave New World". Other box office performers include "Sinners", showing strong staying power in its third weekend; "A Minecraft Movie", nearing $400 million domestically; and "The Accountant 2", underperforming expectations. Nicolas Cage's "The Surfer" had a modest opening.
