Two 18th-century shipwrecks off Costa Rica, initially believed to be pirate ships, have been identified as Danish slave ships, Fridericus Quartus and Christianus Quintus. Analysis of wood samples, dated through dendrochronology, revealed their origin in Northern Europe. Further evidence, including Danish-made clay pipes and bricks, confirmed their identity. The ships, wrecked in 1710, with one reportedly set ablaze, represent a significant discovery filling gaps in Danish maritime history.
