China Import Loophole Closes, Raising Prices

Read, Watch or Listen

The de minimis exemption, allowing import of goods under $800 from China and Hong Kong without tariffs or customs forms, is closing Friday. This loophole, used for over a billion packages annually, will increase prices for consumers. While initially closed by President Trump in February, then briefly reinstated, the closure is now permanent for Chinese and Hong Kong goods. Retailers like Shein and Temu expect reduced orders due to higher costs and inconvenience.
