Disgraced Cardinal Becciu formally withdraws from participation in conclave to elect pope

Cardinal Angelo Becciu, central to the Vatican's recent financial trial, withdrew from the upcoming papal conclave. Despite initially claiming his right to participate, Becciu cited the 'good of the church' and obedience to Pope Francis's prior wishes as reasons for his decision. Though technically eligible, Becciu was considered a 'non-elector' by the Vatican. His withdrawal leaves 133 cardinal electors, following two other withdrawals due to health concerns. Becciu's 2020 downfall involved allegations of financial misconduct, a conviction he's appealing. His decision follows reports of letters from Pope Francis before his death instructing Becciu not to participate.
