Italy’s Mediobanca launches €6.3bn offer for Banca Generali

Mediobanca, an Italian lender, launched a €6.3 billion takeover bid for its rival, Banca Generali, aiming to create a European market leader. This move comes amid industry consolidation and a hostile bid from Monte dei Paschi di Siena. To finance the acquisition, Mediobanca plans to sell its stake in Assicurazioni Generali, Banca Generali's parent company. The deal, expected to generate €300 million in synergies, will be put to a shareholder vote on June 16th. The takeover aims to expand Mediobanca's wealth management and address shareholder concerns about over-reliance on Generali.
