Santa Maria Maggiore: why Pope Francis decided ‘this is my place’ to be buried

Pope Francis, who passed away on Monday at 88, will be buried in Santa Maria Maggiore basilica in Rome, a location he frequented during his papacy. Unlike previous popes, he opted for a simple burial in a small niche, eschewing a grand ceremony in St. Peter's Basilica. His decision reflects his humble approach, mirroring the life of St. Francis of Assisi. The basilica holds personal significance for Francis, who often prayed there and even had a near-miss with a pickpocket during a visit. His final resting place will be marked only with his papal name in Latin.
