Researchers found colibactin-related mutations were three times more common in early-onset cancers compared to late-onset cases, suggesting the toxin plays a significant role in the disease's development. The increasing incidence of early-onset colorectal cancer in young adults might be partly explained by this finding. Further research is needed to confirm causality and explore potential interventions, including probiotics and early detection tests.
