Texas Governor Greg Abbott's long-sought school voucher program has passed the state legislature. The program, costing an initial $1 billion and projected to reach $4 billion by 2030, will provide parents with state funds – up to $10,000 annually per student – for private school tuition and other educational expenses. The bill, passed by the Senate 19-12, will now go to Abbott for his signature. Similar programs exist in other states, but voter referendums rejected them in several others in 2024. The Texas Comptroller will oversee the program.
