Scientists have discovered a rare, ancient lineage of carnivorous caterpillar in Hawaii that uses insect remains as camouflage while living in spiderwebs. Dubbed the "bone collector," this unique caterpillar, belonging to the genus Hyposmocoma, preys on other insects trapped in the webs. Its existence is threatened by habitat loss and invasive species, confining it to a small area of Oahu's Waiʻanae mountain range. The caterpillar's lineage dates back at least six million years, predating the island's formation, highlighting the urgent need for conservation efforts to protect this remarkable creature.
