Following Pope Francis' death, 135 cardinal electors, mostly appointed by Francis himself, will convene in a conclave to choose his successor. This conclave will be historically significant, representing the most geographically diverse group of electors ever, with a significant decrease in European representation. The process is expected to be complex, given the diverse viewpoints and lack of prior interaction among many electors, potentially leading to faction formation. The dean of the College of Cardinals, Cardinal Giovanni Battista Re, will preside over the initial Mass, but the conclave will be overseen by Cardinal Pietro Parolin.
