Pope Francis, everyman leader of the Roman Catholic Church, dies at 88

Pope Francis, the first Latin American pope known for his humility and social justice outreach, died at age 88. The Vatican confirmed his death, noting his life was dedicated to serving God and the Church. Francis, who had several health issues including respiratory problems and gastrointestinal issues, had been hospitalized for over five weeks earlier in the year for bilateral pneumonia and other complications. His death initiates a nine-day mourning period, followed by a conclave to elect his successor.
