A juvenile colossal squid, the world's largest squid species, was filmed for the first time in its natural habitat at a depth of nearly 2,000 feet in the South Atlantic. The footage, captured by the Schmidt Ocean Institute's remotely operated vehicle, shows a footlong squid near the South Sandwich Islands. This is a significant discovery as colossal squid have only previously been found dead or as stomach contents of other marine animals. The institute also captured the first-ever video of a glacial glass squid during a separate expedition.
