Scientists have captured the first-ever video footage of a live colossal squid, the world's heaviest invertebrate. The juvenile squid, approximately one foot long, was filmed at a depth of 1,968 feet near the South Sandwich Islands by the Schmidt Ocean Institute's remotely operated vehicle, SuBastian. This marks a significant discovery, as the colossal squid, formally identified in 1925, has previously only been observed through remains found in the stomachs of other sea creatures. The footage provides valuable insight into this elusive creature's behavior and life cycle.
