For the first time, a colossal squid has been filmed alive in its natural habitat. A 30cm juvenile was captured on camera at a depth of 600m near the South Sandwich Islands during a research expedition. The footage, taken by a remote-controlled vehicle, marks a significant milestone in understanding this elusive creature, which can grow up to 7m long and weigh 500kg. Scientists also filmed a glacial glass squid, highlighting the mysteries still present in the Southern Ocean.
