China's exports jump 12.4% and imports fell as Trump pushed US tariffs higher

China's March exports surged 12.4% year-on-year, driven by preemptive shipments to avoid increased US tariffs. Imports, however, fell 4.3% to $211.3 billion, resulting in a massive $102.6 billion trade surplus. The overall trade surplus for the first quarter reached $273 billion. While China experienced export growth to Southeast Asia, Africa, and India, lower-value exports to the US are declining due to tariffs, impacting items like shoes and clothing. Despite a complex global situation, Chinese officials remain optimistic about the country's diversified export markets and large domestic market.
