Orcas Kill Pygmy Blue Whale in Gruesome Hunt
Tap title to read story
Off Western Australia's coast, tourists witnessed a pod of over 60 orcas hunting and killing a 59-foot pygmy blue whale at Bremer Canyon. This rare event, the fourth filmed orca blue whale hunt at this location, was captured on video and lasted less than 40 minutes. Marine biologists aboard noted the participation of multiple orca family groups, including young calves. While emotionally difficult to witness, the event highlights the orcas' role as apex predators and the vulnerability of the endangered pygmy blue whale population.
