Some Arlington National Cemetery funerals to use horse-drawn caissons

Arlington National Cemetery will resume limited use of horse-drawn caissons for funerals starting June 2nd, after a two-year hiatus due to horse welfare concerns. Initially, two caissons will be used for up to 10 funerals weekly. The Army invested in improving horse care, facilities, and training following the deaths of two horses in 2022. The program aims to gradually increase to approximately 20 weekly funerals as more horses are trained and facilities are upgraded. This limited resumption will still be less than the pre-suspension rate of 30 weekly funerals.
