Rome's Torre dei Conti, a 13th-century tower under EU-funded restoration, partially collapsed Monday near the Roman Forum, injuring one worker and trapping another. A second collapse occurred as rescuers secured the site, making the operation very long and complex, said Rome's prefect, who hoped for a good outcome. The accident came days after the government approved new workplace-safety measures. Mayor Roberto Gualtieri and Culture Minister Alessandro Giuli visited the scene. A visiting tourist described clouds of dust and rescuers pulling three people from a window, one bleeding.
