The East Wing is gone. A White House history buff sees a silver lining
Stewart McLaurin of the White House Historical Association called images of backhoes tearing into the East Wing “jarring,” as demolition cleared space for a 90,000‑square‑foot ballroom sought by President Donald Trump. Photos circulating Oct. 20 sparked outcry; within days, the two‑story wing and a covered walkway between the White House, the family movie theater and a garden dedicated to Jacqueline Kennedy were gone. Trump ordered demolition without National Capital Planning Commission sign-off and fired six Commission of Fine Arts members. The curator’s office cataloged art and furnishings, while the association helped 3D‑scan rooms amid surging interest and attendance.
