U.S. Probes China Deal as Meeting Nears

The Trump administration opened a probe Friday into China’s adherence to a 2020 trade deal, raising the prospect of more tariffs as Donald Trump prepares to meet Xi Jinping next week in South Korea. While U.S. and Chinese officials also confer in Malaysia, recent tit-for-tat moves persist: China tightened mineral export rules and Trump threatened a 100 percent tariff starting Nov. 1. The USTR review will assess Beijing’s shortfalls and harm to U.S. businesses, amid stalled soybean purchases and planned aid for farmers, as officials push for a more reciprocal relationship.
