Trump praises Japan's new prime minister during visit

In Tokyo, President Donald Trump welcomed new Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi and took her to address U.S. troops aboard the USS George Washington. They signed a 'golden age' alliance accord reaffirming a 15% U.S. tax on Japanese imports and a $550 billion Japan investment fund, plus a separate framework on critical minerals and rare earths. Takaichi said Japan will gift cherry trees and fireworks and, according to the White House, plans to nominate Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize. Trump also cited a planned $10 billion Toyota investment and will depart for South Korea amid U.S.-China trade progress.
