Trump Seeks Federal Payout, Democrats Launch Investigation

President Donald Trump says he deserves compensation for investigations he calls politically driven, and the Justice Department under his control could sign off on any payout. He has filed two administrative claims totaling $230 million over the FBI’s Mar-a-Lago search and the earlier Trump-Russia probe; neither has advanced to a lawsuit. Ethics concerns are mounting because top DOJ officials who would approve large settlements previously defended Trump or his allies, and Attorney General Pam Bondi earlier fired the department’s top ethics adviser. Democrats, led by Rep. Jamie Raskin, announced an investigation into what they call a “shakedown.”
