AFGE, Top Federal Workers’ Union, Sides With Republicans on Shutdown

The largest union of federal workers on Monday urged Congress to pass a clean spending bill and end the shutdown today, a striking shift that aligns it with President Trump and Republicans. AFGE president Everett Kelley called for no half measures. The union had previously backed Democrats' push on Affordable Care Act subsidies and opposed Trump's workforce cuts. Meanwhile, about 730,000 employees are working without pay and 670,000 are furloughed. Senate Democrats blocked pay for those still working, while Republicans blocked Democratic bills to pay both working and furloughed workers, and Trump pressed Democrats to support the GOP proposal.
