President Samia Suluhu Hassan was declared the winner of Tanzania’s presidential election with nearly 98 percent of the vote, the electoral commission said, amid days of violent protests and the country’s gravest political crisis in decades. Election monitors and top European Parliament members said the polls were neither free nor fair, citing irregularities, obstructed observers, and a climate of repression and fear. The commission reported turnout of almost 87 percent among 37.6 million registered voters, up from about 50 percent in 2020.
