Hundreds of demonstrators faced off with police in Dar es Salaam on Friday, demanding a halt to election results they say lack credibility, amid military deployment and an internet shutdown. The U.N. cited credible reports of 10 deaths in protests in Dar es Salaam, Shinyanga and Morogoro. A nationwide curfew was extended, flights were canceled, and passengers were stranded. Candidates from the two main opposition parties were barred, while CCM sought to extend its rule. In Zanzibar, the electoral commission said Hussein Mwinyi won 78.8%, which the opposition called massive fraud, as the army vowed to contain spreading unrest.
