Penn State fires James Franklin amid unfathomable three-game slide in Big Ten play

Penn State fired football coach James Franklin six games into his 12th season after a three-game collapse that dropped the preseason No. 2 to 3-3 and 0-3 in Big Ten play. The skid featured a double-OT loss to No. 6 Oregon, a defeat at previously winless UCLA, and a 22-21 home upset by Northwestern in which QB Drew Allar was lost for the season. Associate head coach Terry Smith is interim. AD Patrick Kraft praised Franklin’s tenure but said new leadership is needed. Franklin leaves 104-45, one Big Ten title, and a buyout of about $50 million.
