Worker dies after partial collapse of medieval tower in Rome

Octav Stroici, 66, the worker trapped beneath Rome’s medieval Torre dei Conti after a partial collapse near the Forum, has died, hospital officials said. Pulled out around 23:00 after nearly 12 hours of perilous rescue work using drones and rubble clearers, he went into cardiac arrest in the ambulance. The Romanian national had been conscious and speaking; his wife was at the scene. Three others were rescued, one also Romanian. Prosecutors opened an inquiry as officials detailed the complex operation and a firefighter suffered an eye injury.
