Death rates are rising in young adults in Eastern Europe

Young adult mortality is rising in Eastern Europe even as global death rates fall, according to the Global Burden of Disease study published in The Lancet and presented in Berlin. Deaths among 15–19-year-olds and 20–24-year-olds jumped 54% and 40% from 2011 to 2023, driven by drug use, suicide, HIV, personal violence, conflict and disasters. The report charts surging anxiety (up 63%) and depression (up 26%) worldwide, and warns of a shift toward noncommunicable diseases. While global mortality has dropped 67% since 1950, authors urge targeted public health action to curb rising risks.
