A truck carrying rhesus monkeys overturned on Interstate 59 north of Heidelberg, sending animals into tall roadside grass and crumpling crates marked “live animals.” Authorities said all but one were later killed. The Jasper County Sheriff’s Department said the monkeys came from Tulane University and were described as dangerous, prompting “appropriate actions,” though the cause of the crash and the number of animals remain unclear. Tulane said the primates, housed at its biomedical center but owned by another entity, were not infectious. Wildlife officials remain on site.
