Virginia Advances Redistricting Plan Toward New Congressional Maps

Virginia’s Democratic-led legislature approved the first step toward a constitutional amendment letting lawmakers redraw congressional districts for the 2026 midterms, a power that could add two or three Democratic seats. The change would allow early remapping when states redraw, without eliminating the bipartisan commission or mandating new maps; authority would expire in 2030. Amendments must pass the legislature twice and then a statewide referendum. By voting before Nov. 4, Democrats aim for a second vote in January. The move comes amid a redistricting push after President Trump urged GOP states; Texas, North Carolina and Missouri have passed new maps.
